Thinking about the women who fought for equal pay and equal rights, I made this collage to thank Jayaben Desai who fought for the rights of workers in the Grunswick plant. Trade unions showed no support for the women of South Asian origin who needed their help, which demonstrates that pervasive social racism can have widespread impact on the lives of those excluded by the nature of the colour of their skin, even though those who went on strike were not just fighting for themselves – but for all the people who worked in the factory, many of whom were white.
