Everyday I think about how fortunate I am that my mother ensured I had access to education and saw it as a human right for all. Depriving women and girls of education is taking away the core means by which they can gain independence and find out about themselves. If you deny people the right to education you are also taking away their human right to find out about their history, discover what they are capable of and try to build a life for themselves, free from exploitation and oppression. Those who deny the importance of education and who oppress those who have fought for the right to an education are equally abhorrent. All over the world, we see women, especially those who are people of colour, being denied progression, jobs, the right to set up their own livelihoods, after they have fought and struggled to get an education.
